Q. What was your most memorable moments, when you participated in the workshop?

The moment we finished the presentation. There was a mix feeling of relieved, for the presentation has finished, and the feeling of frustration, for we think the presentation could be better. After the presentation, we started reflecting in our presentation and what we could have done better. The fact that there is not going to be a further presentation but everyone in team are treating this presentation seriously, is a very touching and memorable ending for the workshop.

Q. How did the participation in the workshop helped to nurture your current self?

Through my participation in the workshop from 2017-2019, one thing I learnt is the importance of looking things at different perspective. Over three times participating in the workshop, I was a group member, a group leader, and a facilitator staff. Standing at different position, the way I interact with Japanese participants has drastically changed over different roles. As a participating member, I was more focused on outputting and defending my own ideas. However, as I became a group leader, I started to undestand the importance of a coordinator, by encouraging everyone’s participation and gathering everyone’s ideas. These experiences shaped me to become a better listener and coordinator.

Q. In your opinion, what experiences from the workshop can contribute to the growth of globalization in Japan?

The face-to-face interaction with Japanese university students definitely helps in this matter. It helps the foreigners in Japan to better understand foreigners, at the same time, improve understanding of Japanese on foreigners. One episode I still remembered is, a Japanese participant said that it was amazing that the ASJA students were smiling/laughing, while being serious, during the group discussion. It changes his opinion about the common working culture, where no chit-chat or laughing is the symbol of inefficient. Globalization occurs when the understanding deepening, and it happens in the everyday discussion of the ASJA workshop.
